NHL leaders seem excited but a bit scared to move forward to set up a new NHL hockey team in Las Vegas, the casino gambling and entertainment center of the USA. In general the Las Vegas officials, and in particular Mayor Goodman, have been looking for a major sports license to place in the mecca of US gambling. It appeared to some that the National Hockey League (NHL) would be a rational partner for the city in a deal from which both parties can make profits. But the NHL leaders seem a bit doubtful to take the risk.
Although logistical problems are an issue for the Hockey League in Las Vegas, they find themselves more pressed to deal rather than expand. There are already quite a few franchises located in the southern half of the US who are not able to support themselves, such as Phoenix, Florida, and Tampa.
Transferring a franchise, as seen in some disorderly negotiation regarding Phoenix, would create a world of problems. Vegas do not have the facilities, and capable builders seem be caught up in the necessity to see a hockey team locked in before a suitable arena will be constructed.
Still the NHL players flock to the annual awards presentation in Vegas, proving the city’s reputation among players who regularly skip the awards process. Hockey’s anxious and desperate need to develop its visibility and public awareness gel’s well with Las Vegas. Sports betting in US, especially in Vegas, is massive and there couldn’t be a better place to put a team that you would bet on than in Vegas.
The owner of the NBA Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino in Las Vegas said that he thinks Las Vegas is a great market and that it would be great to have an NHL team there.
Washington Capitols general manager has also stated that he thinks that the NHL would work well there but the League Commissioner, Gary Bettman has not yet seen the success of the annual awards show translating into a new franchise.
