The lag in economy has had its own repercussions with even American pro and college sports team searching for avenues to bring in revenue. Lottery tickets in the recent past have logos of teams, and basketball games are being played at casino hotels.
Delaware and New Jersey are facing their own issues relating to budgets and are insisting on legalizing sports betting, this would include horse racing, lotteries, slot machines, and in Atlantic City – table games. These plans are anyway being turned down by giant pro leagues, like NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball (MLB betting is huge) including NCAA. Federal courts are asking for this effort form Delaware to be stalled, as it gives room for cheating and game-fixing and questions the integrity of sports too!
Delaware was let off from the federal ban on sports betting passed by congress in 1992 and came into effect in Jan 1, 1993. It is felt by many officials that if Delaware and New Jersey officials are successful in their requests to open sports-betting, then this would resemble the spread of state lotteries when they were introduced.
Gambling produces tax revenue and has an impact on the economy, not only from the betting aspect but also from money that comes in from visitors. Delaware’s plan to legalize sports-betting could fetch them an additional $55 million, a major boost for the economy.
Though the opposition is on from NCAA and pro-sports leagues, teams, schools and conferences are seeing millions coming in from varied business deals with gambling companies.
