Over the past few months, China has been following the USA’s steps in cracking down online gambling and taking a totalitarian government approach. Interestingly China and USA government forces have spent the first half of 2010 prosecuting internet casino operators that offer betting in roulette, slots and other casino games, and snatching large sums of money. This seems to have been the 2010 objective for many lawmakers in China, and they have done a good job of it as well.
The Chinese news service ‘Xinhua’ reported that the Chinese campaign against online gambling started way back in February and has resulted in 3400 persons being arrested and a seizure of $88 million in gaming funds. Gambling websites and payment processors have been totally blocked and internet gambling has been prohibited. US citizens with their Chinese counterparts can now join hands and empathize with each other, as millions of dollars have been taken from frozen bank accounts.
UK lawmakers have accepted the desire of the population to support online sports betting and internet casinos, rather than fight against the wish of the public. Legislators continue to study and twist UK gaming rules to ensure the greatest freedom for residents while protecting against fraud. Though it is a proven fact that the US is a capitalist republic, such actions of denial and banning of online gambling indicate otherwise. The US is still facing a number of oppositions and reservations in regulating online gambling. As corporations consolidate in the US, especially financial concerns, and their growing interlocking with the federal government, Internet gaming may be the beginning of China’s resemblance to the US.
